The glamorous life of the reviewer.
I signed up to review this show before I got the cold - and before I realised just how full-on the work week was going to shape up to be. By the time Friday evening rolled around I was so tired I was afraid I was going to fall off the bar stool at Q theatre. So I had two coffees. Even as I was drinking them I knew it was a bad idea. But the show was only an hour long. I was sure my bladder could cope. The seats were unallocated and we were shepherded into the middle of the row (the worst position for the person who has just consumed two coffees). My anxiety increased as the minutes ticked by. The show started almost 20 minutes late. The evening featured four improvised skits based on four words or phrases supplied by the audience. Fittingly, the last phrase was 'bladder pressure.' The show ended, and no one at either end of our row seemed in a hurry to leave. The music pumping through the speakers was Queen's 'Under Pressure' - reflecting my situation with the lyrics: "pressure pushing down on me" and "screaming - let me out!" At last I was able to escape and head home, where I wrote the following review through a fog of caffeine and exhaustion. And that's a behind the scenes glimpse at the glamorous life of a reviewer.
